The Malibu Road Association’s Board of Directors, all of them volunteers, consists of nine elected and three appointed members who meet once each month to take up new projects, deal with residents’ concerns and gripes, and various other matters affecting our Road. The Board, in 2009, consists of the following:
Bill Rhodes, President
Chris Reed, Vice President
Holly Sawyer, Treasurer
Jan Currey
Ari David
Douglas Helm
Gary Patterson
Thomas Jones
Tom Sawyer
Joel Walker
Marty Cooper (emeritus)
The following are some of the topics addressed, services provided by, and accomplishments of the MRA:
Speed signs – the first street in the City of Malibu to install its own, privately financed radar signs (5 of them so far).
Weekly road cleanup.
Collection of Filming Fees and helping enforce filming regulations.
Placing pressure on contractors to keep area clean.
Liaison with City, County & State.
Close contact with City Officials.
Legal Advocacy (when within our charter).
Pro-active roles in important issues affecting Malibu Road Residents.
Demanding and receiving dramatic changes in the new Trash pickup contract (effective mid-2008), which has greatly alleviated the unsightly presence of those plastic bins.
The MRA was instrumental in preventing the building of a hotel adjacent to Pepperdine University (correctly nailing it as a boondoggle).
Lobbied for cityhood.
Monitored (and reduced) illegal drainage into bluffs along Malibu Road.
Finally, we’ve morphed from being a Property Owners Association to a Residents Association, thus serving, and welcoming the input and participation of the road’s many renters.
So come to us with your concerns. We’re here to help make living in Paradise even better.
